We are Disney fans at this house, and whether you are a Disney fan or not, you have seen and heard Frozen. I have been going around singing 'the hot and the cold are both so intense, put 'em together it just makes sense!' and 'oh the sky will be blue, and you guys will be there toooooooo..... IN SUMMER'. Dianne *might* be getting tired of hearing it. Just in case you have been living under a rock or held captive by Universal, the words are from the song 'In Summer' from the Frozen soundtrack.
Time flies, doesn't it? It is hard to believe that I have not posted anything on the blog since April! There has been a flurry of activity here at Addison Farms. We hosted our first wedding at Addison Farms Vineyard Memorial Day weekend. We are proud to say we were a part of a beautiful event for Elizabeth and John Ray.
We are working hard in the vines, trying to keep up with the growth, manage fungal pressures, and grow some great fruit. I am excited about this season. It has been warm without exception and mostly dry, with the exception of this past week, which has seen a little over 2.6" of rain. Heat accumulation is much better than 2013, though still not as robust as 2010, '11 or '12. As of 1 July, we are about 120 GDD [base 50F] ahead of 2013, but about that same amount less than the high water mark of 2010. So far, no day has officially [as measured by the weather station we monitor] been over 90F, but that does not mean it has not felt hotter than the hinges on the gates to Hades. Heat accumulation is a good [but not direct] indicator of building sugars. Warmer indicates the likelihood of more sugar, cooler suggests less.
We added a new retail partner, too. Maggie B's Wine and Specialty Store is carrying all of the currently-available Addison Farms Vineyard wines. We are proud to be part of the offerings at Maggie B's! Stop by and see them at 10-C South Main St, Weaverville, NC.
We bottled our 2013 white wines about a month ago. We should have those in the tasting room in the next few weeks; we are still waiting on one label approval before we have the printing done.
The 2013 Crown & Plough Sangiovese rosé, like our Orion and Smokehouse Red, is another food-friendly wine. Berries on the nose, great acid, and ready to pair with many foods, but especially something like raw oysters or light pasta.
The 2013 Gwinn is a Pinot Gris. This one also has a really great acidity with nice pear and melon notes on the nose.
We have some exciting things coming up too. This year, you will once again find Addison Farms Vineyard as a stop on the Come to Leicester Studio Tour, 10a-6p, the weekend of 16-17 August, and at the Asheville Wine and Food Festival Grand Tasting on Sat 23 August.
In September, we will be participating in our third ASAP Farm Tour the weekend of 20-21 September. On Saturday 11 October, we will host the second annual Cycle to Farm Sandy Mush ride - if you have not registered, you better hurry. You don't want to miss out.
On Saturday 15 Nov, Chef Corey Marino from Catering by Corey is going to be preparing a wine dinner for us. The menu isn't set yet, but put this one on your calendar. Chef Corey will not disappoint you; her food is incredible.
Come on out to the tasting room and see us this summer. The vineyard is looking great, canopy is just about to full sail, and veraison is just a few weeks away.
